Barry Howard
Barry Howard is a founding partner of this firm and has been practicing law since 1978. Mr. Howard received his B.S. in Business Administration majoring in accounting from the University of Tennessee in 1975. He also received his J.D. degree from the University of Tennessee in 1977. Mr. Howard’s practice is limited to civil litigation, primarily handling professional liability, business litigation, insurance defense and coverage and products liability matters for corporate and insurance clients.
The range of products that Mr. Howard has been involved in defending includes firearms, industrial equipment, herbicides, automobiles, kerosene heaters, CNC lathes, ATVs, scissors lifts, track drills, waste containers, motorcycles, helmets, wave runners, and other consumer products.
In addition to the products cases mentioned above, Mr. Howard’s jury trial experience includes defending cases involving professional liability claims against lawyers, accountants, real estate agents, insurance agents and brokers, and pharmacists.
Some of the better known cases in which he has been involved in his over 30 years of experience include representing the Maury County Sheriff’s Department in a jail fire in which 42 inmates and visitors perished, acting as local counsel for Agent Orange cases filed in Tennessee, defending ATV cases and a Jeep rollover case.
Mr. Howard is a member of the Nashville and Tennessee Bar Associations. In addition to being a member of the bar of Tennessee he is also admitted to practice in the United States District Courts for the Middle, Eastern and Western Districts of Tennessee. He is admitted to practice before the United States Sixth Circuit Court of Appeal where he first argued in 1980. He is also a member of the International Association of Defense Counsel where he is a member of the professional and products liability committees, the Defense Research Institute and the Tennessee Defense Lawyers Association. Mr. Howard has presented a number of continuing legal education programs for the Nashville Bar Association, Tennessee Defense Lawyers, Cumberland University School of Law, Insurers of Tennessee and commercial providers on topics such as “Trying Wrongful Death Cases,” “Recent Developments in Products Liability Law,” Defending Bad Faith Cases,” and “Insurance Agent Errors and Omissions.”
Mr. Howard is a Tennessee Supreme Court Rule 31 listed civil mediator and a member of the Tennessee Association of Professional Mediators.
